The UAE is taking another important step towards building a more connected and efficient logistics network. In September 2026, Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group launched a new direct rail freight service connecting Fujairah Terminals with the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). The service links the UAE’s East Coast maritime gateway with one of Abu Dhabi’s major industrial areas, creating a direct rail connection of around 200 kilometres. Operating three times a week, the service is designed to bring cargo closer to warehouses, production facilities and markets while making the movement of goods across the country more efficient.
The new connection is part of a much wider transformation of the UAE’s logistics infrastructure. Etihad Rail’s national network stretches approximately 900 kilometres from Ghuwaifat to Fujairah, connecting major cities, ports and industrial hubs. Freight operations currently serve 11 terminals and four major ports, creating an integrated rail network that connects different parts of the country's trade and logistics ecosystem. By linking rail with ports and industrial centres, the network provides an additional way to move large volumes of cargo across the UAE while reducing reliance on long-distance road transportation.
The partnership between Etihad Rail and AD Ports also demonstrates how modern logistics is moving beyond simply transporting cargo from one location to another. At ICAD, the new service includes a customs-enabled inland cargo gateway, allowing containers arriving through Fujairah to be transported by rail for inspection, customs clearance and release closer to their final destination. This can reduce handling requirements and simplify the journey from port to market. For a country that serves as a major connection point between Asia, Europe, Africa and the wider Middle East, stronger links between ports, railways and industrial areas can play an important role in keeping trade moving efficiently.
As the UAE continues to develop its logistics infrastructure, rail is becoming an increasingly important part of the country's wider supply chain. Etihad Rail has highlighted the network's role in improving supply-chain efficiency and connecting key economic centres, while AD Ports Group continues to expand its integrated trade and logistics capabilities. For consumers, these developments may happen largely behind the scenes, but they support something familiar: helping products move more efficiently from international markets, through ports and distribution networks, and ultimately closer to the places where they are needed. The continued development of rail and port connectivity is therefore not just about transportation—it is helping shape the UAE's future as a connected regional logistics hub.
